FG destroys Igbo market in Abuja, blocks traders from recovering goods.

The FCT Administration Department of Development Control today supervised the demolition of the popular UTC market at Area 10 in the Federal Capital Territory ( FCT ), People Gazette reports.

FCTA

Men of the Department of Development Control under the FCTA stormed the market as early as 7 am with heavily armed men and earth-moving machines.

The publication reports that the armed men stopped traders from evacuating their goods while the heavy machines started the demolition of the massive market which has for decades served as the main hub of printing business in the nation’s capital.

The market is popularly known as a hub for electrical appliances, especially refrigerators, and air conditioners, contributing to the billions in tax receipts the federal government draws annually from the mostly Igbo traders there.

Traders in the market are openly protesting the demolition of their sole means of livelihood without much notice.

People Gazette reports that the demolition of the market was started in April and continued today, 3rd June under the supervision of the FCTA officials.
